Interpretation and environmental education tools for the visually impaired population implemented by the Bogota Botanical Garden

Abstract

The Bogotá Botanical Garden (JBB) José Celestino Mutis, is a space that has a captivating biodiversity that represents different types of ecosystems in Colombia which, from its mission, designs and implements environmental education programs for the conservation and maintenance of collections. living flora, as managed from one of its areas such as the Educational and Cultural Subdirectorate (SEC), in order to seek the appropriation and enjoyment by citizens of these plant covers and contribute to the environmental sustainability of the city ​​and region. In compliance with these objectives, the JBB has implemented some processes in order to offer its services in an inclusive manner. However, there is a limitation of tools that strengthen interpretation and environmental education when working with the blind population. Therefore, this project seeks to expose some of these tools. In this way, during the development of the research, the strategies that the JBB has already implemented with the blind population were compiled, the perception and opinion of a group of people from the National Institute for the Blind was recognized, referring to the mechanisms of environmental interpretation that manages the Garden, and from this, it contributed to the design and implementation of an environmental interpretation guide of the guidelines for the attention within the JBB of the population with visual impairment in environmental expeditions and the development of a braille booklet of the living collections most representative of the JBB.
