Abstract

The objective of this research was to know the complexity of the local knowledge that children acquire about howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata and A. pigra) in their community. In the framework of an environmental education workshop instruments were applied, in order to gather information related to the local knowledge of the students of a rural multigrade primary school in Tabasco, Mexico, about howler monkeys in their community (Alouatta palliata and A. pigra). The process involved 22 students aged between 6 and 12 years to whom a questionnaire was applied before the workshop and whose results provided information related to local knowledge about primate species and the environment they inhabit. It was also included the instruction to make a drawing that illustrates how the howler monkeys they know live; and, in a complementary way, the students made a free writing about the monkeys. The information contained in the questionnaire, the drawings and the narratives were analyzed with the content analysis technique; the results obtained showed that students recognize the two species of howler monkeys and at least four threats they face. In addition, they describe important biological and behavioral characteristics of these species, incorporate beliefs and propose actions to protect primates.
