Structure and Power in Pedagogical Practice: An Analysis from Bernstein
Abstract
This reflective article addresses pedagogical practice from the sociological theory of Basil Bernstein and those who have applied his theory. It seeks to transcend the conceptual segmentation that characterizes contemporary pedagogical studies, generally centered on qualitative and quantitative empirical models. The multiplicity of approaches—behaviorist, constructivist, hermeneutic, phenomenological, or humanist, among others—has generated compartmentalized discourses that limit the understanding of pedagogical practice to what occurs in the classroom and the teacher's technical or instrumental performance. This contextualist view privileges the description of what the teacher does, neglecting the structure of social relations that underpins all pedagogical practice. Based on the theory of educational transmissions, the article analyzes the internal grammar that produces pedagogical codes, regulating positions, dispositions, practices, and identities. The article argues that the various methodological approaches constitute an “added code” that obscures the internal structure of pedagogical practice and hinders its understanding in terms of power, control, and cultural transmission. While the text seeks to offer a non-subjective perspective, in which pedagogy is understood as a structural device for regulating and producing consciousness, beyond the particular viewpoint of the person formulating it, this does not mean placing Bernstein within structuralism.
