A Teaching Strategy to Understand the Importance of Vaccination against covid-19
Abstract
This paper describes a teaching strategy based on the didactic cycle of Neus Sanmartí (1996) and some principles of the Critical Significant Learning Theory (CSLT) of Moreira (2010), to understand the importance of the vaccination process against covid. 19 among eighth grade students at the Institución Educativa Barrio Santa Margarita in the City of Medellin. The strategy is divided into four phases: inquiry, introduction of new explanatory models, structuring and application of the new models. From the methodological point of view, a qualitative approach is assumed, based on Educational Action Research, in accordance with the approaches of Bausela (1992) and Restrepo (2004). During the investigation, it was possible to characterize some beliefs of the students regarding the vaccination process; regarding the introduction of new explanatory models, information on vaccines was worked; in the case of the products of the structuring, synoptic and folding tables were built in which relevant information on the vaccines was synthesized; and as a product of the application phase, the students edited and published videos in institutional and local social networks promoting the vaccination process against Covid 19. Through the implementation of the proposal, not only was it possible to impact the 8th grade students, for whom it was initially designed, but also, it also had an influence throughout the institution due to the advertising videos that were designed and published in various institutional media and one local media. The impact is that the students who improved their understanding of how vaccines work and how the body reacts to them changed their behavior by accepting them, from the 828 students who were of the age to vaccinate with the first dose, at the time of collecting the information, 778 (94%) had been vaccinated and only 50 (6%) were missing.
